Kayak Compartment Cover

So we have a kayak, and it is a long two person kayak, with two storage compartments that have screwable lids. Unfortuantely one of the lids has been lost, so rather than buy a new one I thought what a great opportunity to see if I could make something with my 3D Printer!

And after a couple hours of modeling on Fusion 360 I had come up with this:

So I managed to create this model relatively easily because on the Kayak in question there are two storage compartments, one of which still has a cover. So this project was an ideal project to practice replicating a real life object with:

So the above images show, the piece I'm trying to replicate, now as the images demonstrate it is important to note the intersting thread mechanisim that locks the port hole cover in place.
That was the hardest part to replicate and in the end I used the Pipe tool and the Rotate Object around a Setpoint tool within fusion 360 to create it.

Now due to the print bed of my 3D printer being 25 x 21 x 21 cm I was definitely going to have to break the design up to be able ot print it.

In the end I decided on spliting it into 4 pieces and printing it like so, using pegs and I thought most likely glue to attach it all together:

After printing all four pieces, and gluing them togther I ended up with a product that I was pretty happy with for a first attempt, it fit well and was secure when screwed in.

Overall this was a really interesting project, it was fun to try and replicate an object in real life and put what I have previously learnt about Fusion 360 into practice. I printed the final piece from red Amazon Basics PLA because it was the cheapest filament I have. I know that its not the strongest filament so as this piece will see a reasonable amount of use I may have to reprint it from something stronger maybe PETG or PC, but overall I would call this a success. :-)
